Multicturalism and Terrorism

2009

By Gene Lalor

No one can ever accuse the government of the United States of having an excess of either intelligence or discretion. Security lapses and abuses of visas were the primary underlying causes of the attacks of September 11th, 2001 and we are currently in process of repeating those same, deadly errors. The World Trade Center hasn't even been rebuilt, in fact it's far from being re-built, yet our State Department in 2008 extended invites to 3400 residents of nations deemed state sponsors of terrorism to come on in!

We like Asians even more, survey finds

Multiculturalism

4:00AM Tuesday Jan 27, 2009 By Lincoln Tan More New Zealanders say Asian immigrants not only bring in valuable cultural diversity but also improve workplace productivity, a survey has found. The survey of 1000 New Zealanders, conducted from late September to October, and released yesterday, found that 82 per cent thought Asian immigrants brought valuable cultural diversity to New Zealand, up from 76 per cent in 2007. Six in 10 said Asian employees improved workplace productivity, a rise of 10 per cent, said Asia New Zealand Foundation. The report, 2008 Perceptions of Asia, also found 75 per cent of New Zealanders saw the Asian region as being more important to New Zealand's future than Europe (67 per cent) and North America (55 per cent). New Zealanders are also mixing more with their Asian neighbours and the survey also found that Kiwis felt warmer towards people from China, India and Japan compared with their Australian counterparts.

Johann Hari: Rowan Williams has shown us one thing – why multiculturalism must be abandoned

The Archbishop has unwittingly pointed us towards a vision of a better Britain Monday, 11 February 2008

For five days now, the Archbishop of Canterbury has been chorusing: how do you solve a problem like sharia? Ever since he suggested it is "unavoidable" – and desirable – for Britain to have Islamic courts ruling on Muslim family affairs, bashing the bishop has become a national sport. But this row shouldn't be just about the pitiful contortions of the head of a dying Church. Rowan Williams has shown us why the doctrine of multiculturalism needs to abandoned. If you really believe that Britain is comprised of a smorgasbord of "cultures" that need to be preserved, promoted and respected as an end in itself, then this proposal is perfectly logical. Different cultures should have different courts, rules, and schools.

Multiculturism a Factor Turning Moderate Muslims Radical?

William Federer highlights unintended consequence of over tolerating Islam By Willam J. Federer

March 6, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Britain's Daily Mail, Jan. 29, 2007, reported in the article "Multiculturalism drives young Muslims to shun British values":

Multiculturalism has alienated an entire generation of young Muslims and made them increasingly radical, a report has found. In stark contrast with their parents, growing numbers sympathize with extreme teachings of Islam, with almost four in 10 wanting to live under Sharia law in Britain. The study identifies significant support for wearing the veil in public … and even punishment by death for Muslims who convert to another religion. Most alarmingly, 13 percent of young Muslims said they "admired" organizations such as al-Qaida which are prepared to "fight the West." read more

Spotlight on multiculturism in schools

11 Jun 2008, PR 112/08

One of the UK’s leading researchers on young people and social identities, including racialisation and gender, will examine the ways in which multiracisms and multicultures have been negotiated in UK schools when she delivers this year’s King’s College London Annual Education lecture.

Professor Ann Phoenix, Co-Director of the Thomas Coram Research Unit at the Institute of Education, will give the Department of Education & Professional Studies’ Annual Lectures on Old battles on new terrain or new battles on old terrain? Renegotiating multicultural.

It will take place at 17.30 on Wednesday 11 June in the Great Hall, King’s College London, Strand Campus, WC2.

Over the last five years multiculturalism has re-emerged as a site of heated debate as writers, across the political spectrum, have argued that multiculturalism as philosophy and practice is untenable. At the same time children in UK schools are living multicultural in complex ways differentiated by ethnicity, gender, social class and place. read more

Multicultural is a "word" which means a society consisting of varied cultural groups. This seems a fairly accurate description of modern day Britain to me. I don't understand why we should be discouraged to use terminology that has such a clear cut definition. Surely a multicultural society can be united as British! L. Owen, London BBC talking point

Multicultural society has positives. I think it is wonderful to see different cultures and races learn from one another. If people were less afraid of knowing different cultures, there would be so much more harmony in our society today. I agree some people from all cultures tend to keep themselves away from mixing with other groups and that is not beneficial to any society. If I go to Italy, I am going to meet Italians and show them my culture just as I am going to learn some of their ways. I therefore believe such give and take should be practised in this country... but if Brits go abroad and refuse to mix with the natives of those lands then why should it be expected that other cultures be expected to adhere solely to British ways? British ways are not always the best ways... we need to appreciate other cultures because a broadened society makes a better life for all of us.
