These are the numbers of NGO's that are in the council of NGO's at the UN, a consultative status means that these organizations have a beneficial working relationship with the United Nations

Definition/short description

A non-governmental organization (NGO) is any non-profit, voluntary citizens' group which isn't owned by a government organized on a local, national or international level.

In depth

NGO's are Task-oriented and driven by people with a common interest, NGOs perform a variety of service and humanitarian functions, bring citizen concerns to Governments, advocate and monitor policies and encourage political participation through provision of information. Some are organized around specific issues, such as human rights, development aid, environment or health. They provide analysis and expertise, serve as early warning mechanisms and help monitor and implement international agreements.

  • Oxfam International is an international group of independent non-governmental organizations dedicated to fighting poverty and related injustice around the world. The Oxfams work together internationally to achieve greater impact by their collective efforts.
