Definition/short description
Management information system (MIS)can be referred to the detachment of the overall internal controls of businesses or organisations namely:the costs, services and also techniques of the organisation and they are also refer to as a system or process that provides the information necessary to manage an organization effectively. MIS and the information it generates are generally considered essential components of prudent and reasonable business decisions.
In depth
The system of MIS depends largely on the successful integration of multiple kinds of data, from multiple sources within and external to the organisational system, and from multiple levels in the management system. Integration will only be possible if there is compatibility across multiple sub-systems. A broadly shared understanding and vision of MIS if well managed can build a comprehensive, integrated data management system will be essential to the modification of existing applications and the development of new applications that are compatible and that will support development of comprehensive, integrated MIS in the future. [1]
An institution's MIS should be designed to achieve the following goals:
- Enhance effective communication among employees.
- Deliver complex material throughout the institution.
- Provide an objective system for recording and aggregating information.
- Reduce expenses related to labor-intensive manual activities.
- Support the organization's strategic goals and direction.
Because MIS supplies decision makers with facts, it supports and enhances the overall decision making process. MIS also enhances job performance throughout an institution. At the most senior levels, it provides the data and information to help the board and management make strategic decisions. At other levels, MIS provides the means through which the institution's activities are monitored and information is distributed to management, employees, and customers.
The relevance for eGovernment
eGovernment organizations uses MIS systems often to handle sensitive data about individuals and other organizations, using various kinds of identifiers. However, it helps governments to be able to handle any information system that would enable them to capture criminals or handle terrorists that are planning to lunch any attack to a particular nation or capture any suspect(s) before or after an incedent took place. An example includes in 9/11 attacks on the twin towers, whereby through the MIS data base system suspects were captured and some are sill on the run.
