Definition/short description

Internet privacy is about the right to have a certain guaranty that your personal information isn't available for just anyone, but only available to those you choose yourself.

In depth

The importance of internet privacy is undebatable. Whenever you go on the internet, certain information is saved. Like which websites you visit and how much. But online payments require personal information as well. All this personal information is considered to be private and is suppose to be protected.

The relevance for eGovernment

Internet privacy is very important to the government. Making sure that everyone is able to order something online or transfer money in a safe way is of course something that will support the economy. Internet privacy can be considered a right everyone has when using the internet. Internet criminality will be tracked down when reported. As it is as normal to expect that you won’t be robbed during shopping down at the mall, as normal it is to expect that no one will rob you online. So the government puts effort in ensuring that your privacy is secure when it gets online. But this isn't as easy as it sounds. The internet is an international world and largely unregulated. The rules of the game aren't very clear sometimes. So this takes something of your own responsibility when you for example visit a foreign site or whenever you put personal information down. On the other hand, the government uses the internet as well. When we look at eGovernment, it can be vulnerable as well. They want to secure their own internet privacy as well.

Examples

An example of a situation in which internet privacy comes in jeopardy, is when you get hacked or when you receive mails you don't want(spam). In order to assure internet privacy, certain software is available to protect you from hackers and virusses. A diversity of anti-virus software is available and they offer it for free as well!
