Definition/short description

Identity is the sense of the self that we achieve through examing and committing ourselves to the roles and pursuits that define an adult in our society. It gives us a sense of who we are, or it is about knowing what is me and what is not me. In order words, identity is the part of one's personality of which one is aware and able to see as a meaningful and coherent whole. Indentity develops as an individual or adolescents assume commitments to future occupations, adult sex roles, and personal belief systems.

In depth

Identity is the part of one's self personality of which one is aware about and is able to see as meaningful and coherent whole. There are mainly three dominant factors of identity; Sexuality as expressed in an adult gender role, occupation, and ideology or religious beliefs. On the other hand, identity has also responsible on identity formation mainly by constructing the ego identity. In the "identity statues," individuals (adolescents) trying to achieve this status is difficult. They must prepare and ready to take risks and live with uncertainties, which lead to both exploration and commitment process;[1].

However, this exploration distinguish four ways in achieving identity espcially in the case of adolescents such as; identity achieved; the search for life option that is appropriate for ones' choice, Secondly identity foreclosed; the adoption of parental values, third, Moratorium identity; the nuetrality of individual without knowing the self or what to become, and finally, identity diffused; commitment over identity issues [2]. A clear example of this, is the practice of individual 'finger print policy' foreign or immigration police through the intake of refugees in the country as part of the screening process to identify individuals real identity. As a precedence, this policy has however helps to reduce fraud on individual's asylum applications, and to easily locate them where ever they are, and to adequately provide them with immediate needs;[5].
