Definition/short description
Introduction
E-government is the application of electronic and digital information systems in support of its goals. Simply stated, a government has three goals:
- Services performed for its citizens
- Policy and governance to support decision making in society, and
- Quality of society, those areas in society not taken generally taken up by individuals and business, like health, safety and education.
In depth
In each of these aspects of government, digital information systems are a crucial influence. They not only allow government to perform better, but more and more allow government to be organized differently to such an extent, that we may say it is transformed. E-government is a complex and multi disciplinairy area. With the application of IT to government matters the technical aspects merge with legal, procedural and practical. As an example, the registration of a citizen in a citizens registry is not a simple technological act, it means that the person becomes a legal citizen of that local community of nation.
