Definition/short description
Broadband is a technology for high rate data transmission where signals from different independent networks are simultaneously sent via one cable. In Internet the term is used to show a high rate data transmission Internet connection. A working rate of 1 Mbit/sec or more for simultaneous transmission of data, voice and video can be regarded as broadband. In eGovernment the this term is mostly used to address the capacity of the connection between a user and the internet (here is the wikipedia).
Introductory
Broadband technology is used for long-distance high rate transmission of data, voice and video. Broadband infrastructure includes networks of computers and communication systems, such as cable networks, fiber optical cable networks, radio, TV and cellular networks. Communications may utilize a number of distinct physical channel simultaneously. Such channels are distinguished by being separated from each other in time, in frequency or access method. Modern consumer broadband implementations, up to 30 Mbit/sec are hundreds times faster than those of a decade ago.
Broadband is an important policy issue, as it determines the quality of internet available to citizens. In their search to stimulate the quality of the internet many national and local governments look at projects stimulating broadband connections. Often these need glassfibre as their basic carrier, and many 'fibre-to-the-home' FTTH projects are being designed.
